The highly acclaimed Pakistani blockbuster The Legend of Maula Jatt (TLOMJ), featuring Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, is set for its official release in India on October 2, 2024.
The announcement was made through the film’s official Instagram page, where the creators stated, “The Legend Of Maula Jatt’s legacy lives on! Catch the cinematic masterpiece in Indian theatres from 2nd October 2024. Book your tickets now!” They also hinted at more updates, saying, “P.S. Cinema lists to be shared soon.”
Originally, the film was expected to premiere in India in December 2022, but that release was postponed indefinitely, disappointing many fans. At that time, a spokesperson for the Indian multiplex chain INOX noted that the distributor had communicated the indefinite postponement without providing a new release date or an explanation.
Zee Studios, which held the distribution rights, was supposed to launch the film in Delhi and Punjab but remained quiet regarding the postponement in 2022. Although there were no comments from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), sources suggested that theater announcements would come once the film received clearance.
Earlier, reports indicated that the Indian political party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) might have opposed the film’s release; however, the Punjab Censor Board was anticipated to proceed with approval.
The path of TLOMJ from Pakistan to India has been long and marked by delays, yet the film has enjoyed remarkable success. It premiered on October 13, 2022, and made history by surpassing Rs400 crore worldwide by August 2023, becoming the first Pakistani film to achieve this milestone.
With its upcoming release in India, TLOMJ will be the first Pakistani film to grace Indian theaters in over a decade, following Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol. Given its success and star-studded cast, there is significant excitement among Indian fans, who eagerly await this cinematic masterpiece.
